Creating start-up companies: When should a research institute take equity

This presentation presents four different start-up scenarios and proposes possible accompanying return mechanisms for the research institute.

When licensing or otherwise transferring intellectual property to a start-up company, a research institute can do this in return for equity, a royalty on future sales or a combination of both. Depending on its policy and the nature and context of the start-up project a research institute will opt for a different return mechanism. This presentation presents four different start-up scenarios and proposes possible accompanying return mechanisms for the research institute.
