Creating start-up companies: Valuing transferred intellectual property and skills

This presentation provides an overview of the elements considered by each of the parties involved in the discussion on the relative value of transferred intellectual property and know how at the time of the incorporation of a start-up company.

Although providing opportunities for development and commercialization of academic inventions is a primary driver for creating start-up companies, all stakeholders (founding researchers, research institute, company management and investors) involved expect to financially benefit in case a start-up is successful. The potential return for the founding researchers and research institute is typically linked to the valuation of the transferred intellectual property rights and know how relative to the cash and network of the investors and the skills and experience of the management team of the start-up company.
