Managing Patent Information

The filing and prosecution of a patent application generates a multitude of documents, which need to be safely stored, while remaining readily accessible to all involved (TTO staff, inventors).

This requires the availability of a patent database system that is usually managed by the TTO. Ideally, this database should allow responsible staff members to store and access the following data, along with records that detail how data are interrelated: Names, affiliation and personal information of the inventors Name and contact details of possible co-owner(s) Communication between the inventors and the TTO Communication with the appointed patent attorney Communication to and from the patent authorities References to external agreements relevant to the patent application As part of the technology transfer process, a patent (application) of a research institute becomes subject to one or more agreements.
