VIB is a life sciences research institute in Flanders, Belgium. With more than 1200 scientists from over 60 countries, we perform basic research into the molecular foundations of life. VIB works in close partnership with four universities – UGent, KULeuven, University of Antwerp and Vrije Universiteit Brussel and is funded by the Flemish government.
VIB is an excellence-based entrepreneurial institute that focuses on translating basic scientific results into pharmaceutical, agricultural and industrial applications, and plays a role as catalyst in the establishment and growth of biotech clusters.
VIB has a team of 15 persons with a lot of experience from industry, fully dedicated to technology transfer. The team has expertise in intellectual property rights, deal negotiation, European contracts, licensing, establishing spin-off companies, start-up and venture financing and has a very large network in the academic, industrial, governmental and investor community. The team further operates a proof-of-concept fund, a seed money fund and an incubator fund.
Health and medical related research have a dominant position within the activities of VIB. This is illustrated by the fact that at present VIB’s licensees and start-up companies are jointly marketing 6 diagnostics and have 14 candidate drugs in clinical development, which all originated from VIB research. In addition, VIB’s department in plant biotechnology is a world-leader in Plant Science and its research formed the basis for 2 spin-off companies and different partnerships with large crop production companies. http://www.vib.be
