The University of Mons (UMONS), situated in the City of Mons, the capital of the Belgian province of Hainaut, a city with ancient traditions of hospitality, the European Capital of Culture in 2015, is located less than an hour’s drive from Brussels, Charleroi and Lille, and is just 75 minutes from Paris by train.
UMONS is also a founding partner of the Pôle Hainuyer network which allows several institutions of Higher Education and the University to join forces. This cluster of educational and research institutions across the entire province of Hainaut offers students more than 250 degree programmes.
To meet this important mission, UMONS strives to develop highlevel research activities that are open to the outside world, which rely on a multitude of collaborations with public and private organisations in Belgium and abroad. Through its research and close links with industry, UMONS is also actively involved in regional development. Its Research Centres, Multitel, Materia Nova and the Belgian Ceramic Research Centre as well as university spin-off and start-up companies that surround the university, are mostly located on the outskirts of the town centre.
Thanks to this geographical proximity and the small size of these enterprises, UMONS is able to maintain many valuable exchanges with them. UMONS is comprised of more than 700 researchers in some 100 Research departments across its 10 faculties and schools.
There are currently 10 autonomous Research Institutes in which the university is organised. Each Institute brings together the expertise of many researchers from all the faculties and schools of UMONS. Together, they focus their efforts on unifying themes, responding to societal needs.
